Surrey Surprise

It started over Breakfast at the Bel & Dragon at Churt, with a few Burble and Pops of Classics driving across the junction and down Jumps Road. After a dozen or so cranes of my neck, a fellow Breakfaster informed us that there was a Classic Car Show in aid of the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice, and so my Wife asked if I would like to head to the Show hosted by “Robert & Tanya Lewis .. opening up their personal, incredible collection of over 60 pristine classic cars from 1903 to present day, including the fastest car in the world, plus over 100 petrol pumps, thousands of pieces of memorabilia and so much more. It is an opportunity not to be missed.

Some opportunities are simply too good to pass up.

Hyperbole perhaps, but tucked away in the farthest corner of the PCGB Parking Area, was a Daily Driven, unrestored, unwashed icon of the Motoring World. And it wasn’t unwashed in an unloved way. This was Build F7 of the F Series Prototype Porsche 959 in Komfort spec.

I started to chat to the Driver, who it turns out wasn’t the owner but was in fact a mate of the owner, and who had been fortunate enough to be thrown the Keys for the weekend. I was perhaps a little too enthusiastic to discuss the 959 with him, so much so that to shut me up [I think] he offered me the chance to sit in it.

This was the Poster Car on my Bedroom Wall when I was an early Teenager of the late 1980s. The presence of this Super Car was as awesome back then as it was on this Sunny Sunday some 35 Years later. I slid into the Leather Seat, held the Steering Wheel and drew breath.

That this was a US$1.3M Motor didn’t really figure in the moment, this was about me sitting in a Porsche 959 for my first [and possibly only] time.
